Basically the drains for the sunroofs drain into the sills, so if your sunroof sill is dead then you might be letting alot of water into the sills, causing it too rust from the inside out! The series 3 has bigger inlet valves, but the plastic inlet manifold has smaller ports than the series 1 cast inlet manifold, and as you say the ECU setting is for economy.
